Sunday Stamps: Weather

This Sunday Stamps' theme is 'Weather'.

Canada Post has issued a stamp serie about weather.
I was so lucky to have received this beautiful rainbow:

From Scotland I received this stamp showing Loch Ness, but the blue sky and clouds of course also are related to 'weather':

Dutch Post has issued a few stamps on weather.
Two of these have been issued for the 150th anniversary of the KNMI, the Dutch national weather service. Alas I don't have them myself, but you can see the pictures here and there, a rainy and a sunny version (a funny thing is that on the latter the 6th stamp misses the word 'Nederland').

In 1990 Dutch Post issued three weather related stamps: one on the scientifc registration of weather, one on 'a warm summer day', and this one, about cloud formations and isobars:

Besides the KNMI there's an other 'weather predictor': the barometer. I happen to have a real one, inherited from my dear late grandmother, and it almost always shows the correct weather! Dutch post issued this stamp, showing a part of a barometer:

  2. How did you find so many stamps related to weather? I'm still looking for!

    1. The two Dutch ones I had to keep - along with many other stamps from the gulden era - because I cannot use them for postage anymore. The Canadian and Scottish one are just good luck.
Another reason might be: 'the weather' is a vivid subject for small talk in weather-always-changing countries, at least in our rainy-sunny-cloudy-misty-freezing-pouring country. Maybe it is less an issue in countries where there is always nice weather, so less need to issue stamps on the subject?
Although climate and climate change is a subject for the whole world, I think...

  3. So, you never need to rely on the imprecise predictions of the weather channel with your own accurate barometer!
I have never been able to figure out isobars, but I am mesmerized watching the radar maps with the changing weather.

    1. Well, the barometer tells which weather it is at the moment: exact the same as I see when I look out of the window... And it may predict the weather for the coming hours.
However, to know if an outdoors activity will be possible in 2 or more days, I still consult the weather forecast... And indeed www.buitenradar.nl, the (Dutch) 'rain radar' maps! I totally agree with you, ViolteSky, radar maps are such an fascinating invention!

  4. I never knew that Universal Postage and XT500 stamps existed. Fine stamps about a subject that isn't always fine. I always look at the closeness of isobars as a weather guide.

    1. Thank you for your comment, Bob! I've never watched isobars that way, thought them 'just lines' but I will look for info (if I've more time) to know how to read them.
What does 'XT500' mean? I tried to find it via google but I found pictures of motor cycles and of stamps with UK flag and same text, without any explanation of its meaning..
