Sunday Stamps: 'G' is for gebouw, geschiedenis and grappig.

Today's Sunday Stamps is dedicated to the letter 'G'.

Gisteren (= yesterday) I happened to have received a special, 3D mail art elephant. One of the coming days I'll post it on my animals mail art blog. But there is a reason to share some part of it here today with you: two stamps showing a 'gebouw' (building; 'bouwen' means 'to built').

When receiving this piece of mail art I was immediately attracted by this gebouw:

Not because of the gebouw (building) itself, but because of the name. In my twenties I loved to listen to so-called new wave music, and the band 'Bauhaus' had a song I really liked. Later in life I learned about the art movement 'Bauhaus', including architecture. But seeing this stamp made me think of my own geschiedenis (= history) and I was pleased to welcome this gebouw-stamp.

On this piece of mail art there was an other stamp showing a gebouw, which happens to be a galerie (not to be confused with a galerij), namely the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany.

(It was impossible to put the 3D mail art object in my scanner, so I hope that these photos will do.)

The following stamp sheets depict the geschiedenis (history) of Spain in a grappige (funny) way.
Although geschiedenis is no grap (grapje, joke in English), and although it is a sad fact that people don't seem to learn from history and invent bad wheels again and again, and despite of some of the cartoons making me sad because of the depiction of disgusting deeds, I think this 'light' way of sharing historical facts is a good one. Maybe people will learn easier from images than from spoken or written facts.

(By the way: the English word for 'grap(je)', 'joke', has a false friend, too. In Dutch Joke (written the same way, but pronounced 'yoe-ke') is a normal, not necessarily funny, girl's name!)

In: from Hungary and Italy

Such a great surprise: Two musical postcards I received from two different countries on the same day from the same sender, Micu!

The singer and pianist started their journey to the Netherlands in Italy. And the Opera House is located in Budapest, Hungary.

On the back side of both cards pretty stamps: the Plebiscito Square in Napoli:

And the nagy smaragdfémdarázs, which in English is "Large Cuckoo Wasp", but literally translated it will have to to something with the bright colourful smaragd ('smaragd' also is Dutch, and means emerald). Ah, the online translator says 'large emerald metallic wasp'.
More stamps from this serie you can find here.

Thank you very much, Micu, köszönöm nagyon!

Beautiful illustration of a dragonfly, issues as a postage stamp and a maxicard, sent by John.
On the back more insects: a fly, on a stamp issued for the 150th anniversary (in 1989) of the Royal Microscopical Society, and my favourite butterfly, the Atalanta.

And this interesting stamp, or even intriguing as long as I don't know the meaning. I see a lady, a deer, the lady rowing a boat, horses, a building, trees... Please let me know if you know what this stamp is about!

The same day this postcard arrived. I had to look several times, wondering if is it a photo or a painting. It is a painting! Created by Robert K. Calvert, who has painted more trams in that era.

On the back two great matching - metro - stamps.

Thank you very much, John!

This extraordinary house postcard I received from John.
It has been completed circa 1610 and is named 'Little Moreton Hall'. How large this National Trust site is, you can see the beautiful pictures by John, on his blog post of 3rd of March.

Recently I received this Sheep postcard from Eva. I scanned it last week, but was busy doing other things after that.
So I planned to post it the coming weekend, when I suddenly saw that Eva blogged about sheep (more or less) today! Apparently today is a good day to publish Sheep postcards, and I am happy to show you this wonderful picture, taken in Poland by photographer majeczka (Maria Wachala).
Wish I was there in that peaceful quiet landscape, instead of here in too busy times!..

Eva has sent me an other great sheep postcard, which I will keep for (and cherish) myself. Alas lack of time keeps me from my wish to publish all mail I am receiving (and sending). I learned that turning all received and sent mail into digital blog posts takes a lot of my time and will restrain me from sending out snail mail. And that analogue action of course (snail mail lovers will understand) has some priority :-)

Sunday Stamps: Chinese and Taiwanese stamps

It's Sunday, so time for Sunday Stamps!

The 31th of January the Chinese New Year began - it's the Year of the Horse, now - and for this occasion Viridian choose the theme 'Chinese and Taiwanese stamps'.

Thanks to Postcrossing I received several stamps from China and Taiwan. And due to my wishlist - 'Dragons', as I was born in the Year of the Dragon - I received some beautiful Dragon postcards, too. Most of these postcards I'll show on an other occasion.

So today I'd like to share Chinese and Taiwanese stamps with you, and one from Hong Kong, from where I received a beautiful Year-of-the-Dragon card, too.
However I'll start with this backside of a (dragon!) card, which shows two great rubber stamp prints concerning Chinese New Year: The Year of the Dragon, 2012, and the previous year, the Year of the Rabbit:

Even the 'Airmail' is a stamp!
Guangxi from China made my day with sending this card, not only because of the Dragon on the front side and the friendly Happy New Year wish on this backside, but also due to the wonderful stamps, as I love rubberstamps a lot.

And of course you can see a Chinese postage stamp top right.

Secondly I'd like to share these stamps with you, which I received from Taiwan. For me, as a animation movie fan, the Finding Nemo stamp is a delight. And note: top right there's a Chinese New Year stamp, of the Year of the Dragon!

The New Year stamp above has been sticked on the card. Below you can see the same stamp, which is a little different: it has been printed on the back of a postcard:

And this is the postcard the stamp belongs to:

Concerning postcards-and-suitable-stamps, Canada has issued a 'Year of the Dragon' postcard and similar stamp. The postcard I'll show on an other occasion, as said. However, I couldn't wait to show the wonderful Year of the Dragon here!

An other beautiful Dragon postcard came from Hong Kong. With beautiful stamps, too, no dragon but a rubber / cancellation bridge stamp and an Olympic (summer games) stamp:

More stamps from Taiwan:

More stamps from China:

The stamp with the world / round probably show two of the elements (although I'm not sure: I found other stamps of this serie here, which show water (I think) and.. a tree..).

More nice bird stamps:

In: Smurfs and Stamps from Spain

Een smurf die uitkijkt naar de postbode en een smurf die geniet van de zomer (dat moet wel op het zuidelijk halfrond zijn!). Prachtige smurfkaarten, gestuurd door Eva.

A smurf who's waiting for the postman to come, and a smurf who is enjoying summer (must be on the south part of our world, as here it's rainy and cold: winter!). Beautiful smurf postcards, received from Eva.

Ook met dank aan Eva, deze smurf in een griezelige scène. Plus - hieronder - een mooie envelop van... smurfenpapier.

Thanks to Eva also this smurf in a creepy scene arrived in my mailbox. And the beautiful envelope you see below, made of... Smurf paper.

Eva added stamps with one of my other favourite subjects: musical instruments. The Spanish post has issued several stamps on music instruments. These ones, the violin, lute and guitar, are from a serie of four from 2011.
