This Postcards for the Weekend's theme is 'Happiness / Joy'.

A person who brings much joy and happiness, too, is Krtek, or Molletje (Little Mole) as we name him in Dutch. Created by Czech animator Zdeněk Miler, Little Mole shows us how to live happy, with friends and in harmony with nature:



I see DawnTreader has chosen a happy Krtek postcard for this weekend, too, and I think one never will get enough of this friendly and smart mole. The Mole always gets nice solutions to everyday's problems. And even to big problems, as my favourite Little Mole movie proofs (Mole in the city - Molletje in de stad - Krtek ve městě). The Little Mole in the City movie follows the adventures of Krtek and his sidekicks Hedgehog and Rabbit as they head to the city after the forest, their home, has been taken over by industrialization.

Last but not least, there are two women who exactly know how to keep up happiness and joy, even at an elder age. Created by Finnish illustrator Inge Löök, they showed up on this postcard which landed in my mailbox yesterday and which caused a smile from ear to ear on my face, also for the back side.



I received it from Eva, and she suggested matching names for the two. Thanks a lot, Eva! I think I agree with you - be sure that a proper reply will be sent as soon as possible!

Postcards for the Weekend: reflections on water

Thanks to a comment from Maria on one of my Sunday Stamps blog posts, I learned to know her great project 'Postcards for the Weekend'.

Usually I don't scan my incoming postcards, except for the few I'm posting on this blog. In contrary, most of my outgoing postcrossing postcards I did scan. If you don't mind that I'm also posting outgoing postcards for weekends (as I don't always have the opportunity to scan my received postcards), I will happily join!

This weekend's theme is 'Reflections on water'.

I've sent this, little reflected, hippopotamus to a hippopotamus loving postcrosser:



And this typical Dutch scenery (well, ice is not so common anymore since years), now is in hands of a postcrosser in Taiwan. The mills you see belong to the windmills of Kinderdijk:

Sunday Stamps: Lighthouses

This Sunday Stamps theme is 'Lighthouses'. Such a nice and interesting theme, which of course has been theme to Sunday Stamps before.

A beautiful maxicard which I received since then, from Australia, you can see in my blog post of the 11th of November 2015.

Recently, Dutch PostNL has issued some stamps showing lighthouses. This one is from the new Postcrossing stamp sheet, the lighthouse of Marken:




And this is a stamp sheet, dedicated to five fisherman's towns. Two of them, the stamps of Urk and Scheveningen, show lighthouses, too:

Out: to Morocco

The more I look at this postcard, the more I am amazed about how proportions can differ, depending on the point of view.
I've sent the card to someone who likes/loves cows. Well, who wouldn't love cows?

Out: to Sri Lanka

I had sent a small picture of the Amersfoort railway station on a multiview card to Ravindra already. Recently I found an other postcard. With indeed exactly the same photo, but a larger, easier visible one, so now it is on its way to Sri Lanka.

As Ravindra loves lighthouses, too, I added this recently issued stamp on the back.

In: from Australia

Usually I keep the digital versions of my received postcrossing postcards on the postcrossing site only. This time there's a postcard which matches with Eva's postcard, posted yesterday , showing a lighthouse and a postmark on the front side.
It is the very first lighthouse card I received from Australia. Which shows not only a lighthouse and a postmark in front, but also the postage stamp!



The card and stamp show the Casuarina Point lighthouse.

Australia Post has issued many so-called maximum cards, of which I am happy to have received this one.

Rond dezelfde tijd dat een Postcrosser mij een tweede kaart stuurde, raakte een van mijn verzonden kaarten 'expired'. Van het theekopje had ik geen tweede exemplaar, maar omdat de ontvangster volgens haar postcrossing-profiel van theeceremonieën èn van schattige dieren houdt, leek deze kaart me ook geschikt.
Inmiddels is deze kaart aangekomen, en wat blijkt: tot haar schrik was ze mijn eerste kaart vergeten te registreren.
Kortom, twee mensen blij: zij met de twee kaarten en ik omdat ik twee keer met plezier een kaart geschreven en verstuurd had, die uiteindelijk allebéí hun reisdoel gezond en wel bereikten!

About the same time that a Postcrosser had a second try to send me a postcard, one of my sent Postcrossing postcards became 'expired'. The intended receiver loves tea ceremonies, so my first card showed a tea cup. I didn't have a copy of that card, so I re-read her profile and learned that she also loves cute animals. And I happened to have this cute-animal-tea-cups card, which I thought suitable.
This card now has landed, and my previous card turned out to have been arrived, too! She just had forgotten to register it. So now there are two happy people: she because she received two cards, and I because I had the pleasure to write and send two cards, and both of them have arrived safe and sound!

Als je veel post verstuurt, kan het vaker gebeuren dat een kaart niet aankomt. Maar geen man overboord. Zodra Postcrossing aangeeft dat een van mijn kaarten 'expired' is, probeer ik het meestal gewoon nog een keer.
Omgekeerd is het ook leuk om te merken dat mensen moeite doen voor mij. Zo ontving ik deze postcrossing kaart van Monika uit Zwitserland. Bij het registreren zag ik dat ze een heel andere kaart had geüpload, en die vond ik leuk genoeg om in mijn 'postcrossing wall' te laten staan. Maar deze vond ik ook ontzettend leuk, want zeg nu zelf, hoe vaak zien we vuurtorens op 2046 meter hoogte boven zeeniveau?!

When you send a lot of mail, the chance of not-arriving of some mail becomes higher. It's all in the game, so as soon as Postcrossing tells that a sent postcard is 'expired', I usually have a second try and send a new card.
It's nice to see that other people act similar. This way I received this postcard from Monika from Switzerland. When I registered this card, a totally different postcard appeared at my 'postcrossing wall' automatically. That one was too nice to delete. And this card is great and worth showing, too. However, at the Postcrossing wall there's no room for both of them. So I decided to post it here.
I think it special: how many times do we get the opportunity to see a lighthouse at 2046 meters above sea level?

Soms nodigt ook de achterkant van de Postcrossing-post uit om geplaatst te worden. Maar de 'postcrossing-wall' is alleen bedoeld voor de voorkant van de kaarten.

Gelukkig is hier plaats voor de extra's. Zoals bij een Finse kaart. In dit geval betrof het een dubbele kaart met envelop. Omdat ik geboren ben in het jaar van de Draak vind ik illustraties van draken altijd leuk. En Emilia uit Finland was zo attent geweest om onderstaande draken-sticker aan de binnenkant van de kaart te plakken. Ben er dus erg blij mee (zelfs al lijkt 't dier hier te verliezen!?).
Ook de postzegel op de envelop deel ik graag met jullie: een Finse Postcrossing-postzegel!

Sometimes I feel the urge to publish the backside of the Postcrossing-mail. However, the postcrossing wall is meant for the front side of a card only.
Fortunately here's a place for the extra's. For instance of a Finnish card, send by Emilia from Finland. It was a folded card in an envelope. Because I was born in the year of the Dragon I always like illustrations of dragons. And Emilia had been so thoughtful to add the dragon sticker on the inside of her card.
Also I'm happy to share the stamp on the envelope with you: a Finnish postcrossing stamp!

Sunday stamps: more singers

Muziek, altijd een leuk onderwerp, dus ik ben ook nog even door m'n postcrossing kaarten gegaan. En ja! Twee postzegels met een zangeres erop. Op de in 2011 uitgebrachte Amerikaanse 'forever' postzegel zie je, als je goed kijkt, een enthousiast zingende jazz-zangeres. Die op de eerste ontwerpen van deze postzegel nog ontbrak!
Gelukkig kon ik de cyrillische letters ontcijferen, en ja, na wat speuren op internet bleek I.K. Archipova inderdaad een zangeres te zijn, Irina Konstantinovna Archipova, een beroemd Russisch operazangeres nog wel.

Music, I always think it a great theme! So I've searched also in my received postcrossing postcards. And yes! Two stamps showing a singer.
On the American 'forever' stamp, issued in 2011, you can see an enthusiast singing jazz singer (you can see her top left). Who was missing in the first drafts of this stamp!
And fortunately I happened to be able to decipher the cyrillic, and I.K. Archipova appeared to be a singer indeed: Irina Konstantinovna Arkhipova, a Russian opera singer.

Na nog meer puzzelen ontdekte ik dat op de afbeelding op de postzegel hier rechtsboven uit Oekraïne niet een historisch moment, huwelijk of ander officieel gebeuren is afgebeeld, maar dat ook hier zangers en zangeressen te zien zijn!
Het is een scène uit een film, gebaseerd op de opera 'Natalka Poltavka' van de Oekraïnse componist Mykola Lysenko, en de opera is weer gebaseerd op het gelijknamige toneelstuk van Ivan Kotlyarevsky.

After some more deciphering, I learned that the picture on the Ukrainian stamp (top right) does not show a historical moment or wedding or so, but indeed also here singers are shown!
It's from a scene of a movie based on the opera 'Natalka Poltavka' by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, based on the play on the same name by Ivan Kotlyarevsky.

Soms zijn op postcrossing behoorlijk negatieve reakties te lezen over dat de ontvangen objecten geen 'postcards' zouden zijn. Voor mij als slakkenpostliefhebber maar moeilijk te begrijpen, deze discussies. Want hoewel ook ik een voorkeur heb voor '10x15 cm enkele kaarten zonder envelop', ontvang ik alle post met open armen. Ook bij mij kwamen wel eens 'gewone foto's' in de bus, maar wie ben ik om zulke foto's af te wijzen? Mensen hebben per slot van rekening moeite gedaan, voor míj!
Persoonlijk beschouw ik alles wat 'n beetje stevig papier is, met een postzegel erop, en wat door de post zelf is afgeleverd (dus als 'post' goedgekeurd), als een 'postcard' (al stuur ikzelf via postcrossing alleen 'echte' kaarten, zo goed mogelijk aansluitend bij de wensen van de ontvanger).
Voor Nederlanders is er verder nog de verwarring over wat het Engelse woord 'postcard' betekent. Want de letterlijke vertaling 'postkaarten' bestaat niet in 't Nederlands, en 'kaarten' zijn hier zowel dubbelgevouwen kaarten / wenskaarten, als ansichtkaarten / prentbriefkaarten.

Bovenstaande zou ik nooit via Postcrossing versturen. Maar ik vermoed dat de ontvanger in kwestie (die ik toevallig wèl van Postcrossing ken) er best wel eens blij mee zou kunnen zijn!

De linker postzegel komt van het postzegelvel ter ere van de 54e Bosatlas.



Sometimes I read rather negative reactions, in which postcrossers complain that the received objects aren't 'postcards'. For me as a snail mail lover these negativism is hard to understand. Although also I prefer '10x15 cms unfolded postcards without envelopes', I welcome every type of post. Also selfmade photographs arrived into my mailbox, but who am I to reject these photos? Fact is that people have done effort, for me!
Personally I think all things as a 'postcard' when it has been made from sturdy paper / cardboard, stamped and delivered by the mailman (so 'approved' by the mail company - however concerning myself: via postcrossing I'm only sending 'real' cards, trying to match as much as possible to the receiver's wishes).
Moreover, for the Dutch there's the confusion about what the English word 'postcard' means. There is no literally translation, and 'cards' in the Netherlands mean both 'kaarten' / 'wenskaarten' (folded or unfolded wishing cards) and 'kaarten' / 'anscihtkaarten' / 'prentbriefkaarten', which are single, unfolded cards showing some picture in front.

Well, I wouldn't ever dare to send the above via Postcrossing. But I guess the specific receiver (who I happen to know from Postcrossing) might be happy to receive this one!

Ik heb iets met treinen, en dus ook met treinstations. En postcrosser Sylvia was zo aardig om mij deze kaart te sturen, van Berlijn CS. Ik ben nog nooit in deze wereldberoemde stad geweest (al heb ik wel eens in de trein naar Berlijn gezeten, maar ik stapte in Nederland al weer uit).
En op deze manier komt de stad toch een beetje naar ons toe :-)

I like trains, so I also like railway stations. And I became very happy when postcrosser Sylvia was so kind to send me this postcard of Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Berlin Central Station).
I've never been to this famous city yet, however by this card the city comes closer :-)

'Utrecht, zomer 1902, Minrebroederstraat 9'.
De wijzers van de klok van de Domtoren. Voor een Utrechtse postcrosser die van klokken houdt. (Al weet ik niet zeker of incomplete klokken ook gewenst zijn!..)

'Utrecht, summer 1902, Minrebroeder street, 9'.
For a postcrosser who lives in the city of Utrecht and who loves clocks. (Although I'm not sure whether incomplete clocks would be appreciated, too, or not!..)
The text says: "The clockwork and it's clock striking work and the 4 clock hands works were repaired in my house and were cleaned in the end of July and during the whole month of August 1902. W.J.C. Haak, municipal clock repairer".
The clock hands are of the Dom Tower; the length of the minute hand is 3.75 meters, the hour hand measures 2,88 meters.

Deze kaart stuurde ik naar een postcrosser in China, die mij een aardig kaart had gestuurd. En ik kon 't niet laten bij de postzegel een draakje te tekenen. Omdat het 't Chinese Jaar van de Draak is.
