Postcards for the Weekend: Markets

This weekend the theme of Postcards for the Weekend is 'markets'.

This pretty water colour painting of a market in Hong Kong has been painted by Shen Ping, and was sent to me by Natalie from Hong Kong.

This postcard is from a box with - newly printed - old postcards from the city of Utrecht, in the center of the Netherlands. The original photo has been taken more than 100 years ago. At first sight it doesn't look like a market like we know nowadays in our country, but when looking closer you can see that indeed there is merchandise: animals. The note says 'Kippenmarkt', which means 'chicken market'.

See more markets, from all-over the world, at and via Maria's Postcards for the Weekend blog.

In: from Greece

In less than a week this mail traveled from Crete, Greece, to the Netherlands! Above you can see delicious fresh fruit at the market of Chania.
Below you see just a small part of all thousands or millions of butterflies who are fluttering in the Petaloudes Valley of Butterflies on the isle of Rhodes.
The butterfly is called
Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis, a subspecies of the butterfly who in Dutch is called 'Spaanse vlag', which means 'Spanish flag', while the English name is 'Jersey tiger' and the German name 'Russian bear'.

Thank you very much, moltes gràcies, Eva!

Out: to Spain

Sent to Spain, this postcard of the city hall and market in Delft, a nice city in the province of Zuid-Holland. In Spain most of the time I saw indoor markets and only a few outdoor ones. In many Dutch cities there's a weekly market. Outdoors! Which I think funny as one could rely more on the weather in Spain than in the Netherlands. I respect all market men and women who sell their things even when there's pouring rain or freezing cold. However, of course in Spain it might be too warm to keep the fresh food fresh outdoors!..
